There really isn’t a word yet to describe what this is, and what’s also interesting here. The more you try to describe it, you begin to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t experienced it yet. Virtual Experience, Electronic Experiences? I don’t know, neither are great.

Good news! The US government decided today that because I did such a good job investigating the cyber-industrial complex, they’re now going to send me to investigate the prison-industrial complex.
–Journalist and activist Barrett Brown in his public statement
The news: In Texas yesterday, Brown was sentenced to 63 months in prison and more than $890,000 in restitution for his proximity to sources in the hacker group Anonymous and for linking to leaked Stratfor documents. Often called the “spokesman” for Anonymous against his wishes, Brown has been detained since his arrest in 2012, and since then has taken a plea deal to reduce his sentence from the decades of charges the prosecution was seeking. Journalists and activists alike agree this is just part of the slippery slope as classified government documents are leaked by hackers and journalists do their job investigating said »
Why I refuse to see ‘American Sniper’
Why I refuse to see ‘American Sniper’
Hollywood has a way of fictionalizing war, of making it all about “us” and “them.” “Ragheads” was one of the names Kyle gave to the Iraqi people. He said he didn’t give a “flying f**k about the Iraqis.” Kyle dehumanized them. He had to. That’s how the military trains snipers like him. “Every person I killed I strongly believe that they were bad,” Kyle told the BBC.
I have traveled to my father’s battlefield in Vietnam and I have befriended Vietnamese who lost even more than I did during the war. I have learned there is no “us” and “them.” There is only “us.”
Humanity. All of us.
I wish Hollywood would make a war movie that gets that point across.

Matt Bors, Internet’s Best Cartoonist, Explains Why Charlie Hebdo Cartoons Should Be Published
Keep in mind, at the Charlie Hebdo offices, they still have 25 people going in to work there. They slaughtered a dozen people, and a single publication still has more cartoonists working for it than work for all American new media websites. Actually, it’s even starker than that: More cartoonists were killed at the Charlie Hebdo offices than work for American new media websites.
Emphasis mine.
I Don’t Know if Je Suis Charlie
Extremism doesn’t emerge from a vacuum. It’s not the territory of a particular religion or ideology. It isn’t some easy path. It doesn’t happen overnight. As a person who has walked down the street, gun in hand, thinking that I would kill, I can say this: You don’t get there overnight. You don’t get there alone. You get there after everything else you could imagine being good in life is gone, or you are sure the last good things are going to be taken from you. For most people, the day you pick up a gun is the day you don’t think anyone will hear your needs any other way.
I’m glad to see such in depth analysis and reflection on this story finally occuring. Reflecting on stories as complex as this takes time, and I think we would all do »
