Cell phone services are critical to enhancing access to telecommunications in developing countries or rural areas where fixed lines remain limited. Africa has the highest reported growth rate: 260 million subscribers in 2007. However, accurate numbers are hard to come by. A single person may have multiple subscriptions, or they may be pre-paid customers which are difficult to count.

Broadband access remains prohibitively expensive for many living in developing countries. This has led to what is commonly termed the “digital divide”. Africa has one of the lowest rates of subscription; in comparison, Europe’s is one hundred times higher. The top two countries with the highest broadband penetration per capita are also in Europe: Iceland and Denmark.

Chandrayaan-1 — which means “Moon Craft” in ancient Sanskrit — launched from the Sriharikota space center in southern India early Wednesday morning in a two-year mission aimed at laying the groundwork for further Indian space expeditions.

Exploiting Sound, Exploring Silence

Mr. Burwell found that most musical instruments didn’t fit with the minimalist sound sculpture he had in mind, so he used singing bowls, standing metal bells traditionally employed in Buddhist meditation practice that produce a sustained tone when rubbed. For one of the few interior scenes with score — Chigurh menacing a service-station owner with a fateful coin flip — he tuned the music’s swelling hum to the 60-hertz frequency of a refrigerator.

So you’ve gotten rid of the FireWire 400 port and now you’re migrating all your machines to the mini display port?

Hey, Jobsy can’t help that we’re still operating in 2005, or that we think FireWire400 is perfectly useable or don’t want to invest hundreds/thousands to upgrade old drives…

Again, the lack of Firewire 400 on the MBP can be solved with a simple FW800>FW400 cable for like ten bucks, or with an Expresscard which is nice because it lets separate HDs run on a different bus anyway. BUT this means something far more significant to the Macbook audience (or those of us who are the goto guy for all of our friends who fuck up their Macbooks): No more target-disk mode.  It has been the first and most important step in diagnosing problematic macs since its »

Really, *no* FireWire 400? dick move…

I don’t think he’s stuck in 2005, rather in 2075. Jobs despises ports/buttons. He wants to simplify the computer until you’re actually physically manipulating data with your hands.

It’s an understandable goal, and I think the right move for apple. They’re good at being the vanguard of technology. But to force this uber simplicity on their entire portable product line seems unnecessary and detrimental to anyone looking to use this machine for any sort of »

There’s a lot of new tech in these products, but we’re proud of the things we left out…

Steve Jobs

Some people don’t view ports as gaping holes in their machines, but rather as options for the work they need to do. Like maybe, capturing video?

A new “installation” at the Tate Britian is made up of groups of runners sprinting through the neoclassical galleries. Work No. 850, which will continue at the museum until November 16, is a non-stop relay race back and forth through the museum, with each 15-second dash accompanied by a 15-second pause.

The original museum runners were the trio from Godard’s “Bande à Part” in 1964.
