Nandan Ghiya – The Dreamer series via myampgoesto11

Beautiful/Decay: Ghiya’s antique portraits of upper class men and women from the past seem to be physical manifestations of garbled JPEG files. Each portrait is collaged and each frame carefully modified in a ways that resemble corrupted digital photographs. The now forgotten subjects of these portraits may have sought posterity through these images and the artist seems to communicate this in a familiar visual language of the digital. He uses life documented through JPEG’s, glitches, and error messages to reflect the modern plastic identity.

The Baseball Photographer Trading Cards, 1975 – Mike Mandel

135 cards originally sold in randomly sorted packs of ten, 3.5” x 2.5”

The project satirized the phenomenon of the fine art photography community being consumed by the larger art world and commercial culture. I photographed photographers as if they were baseball players and produced a set of cards that were packaged in random groups of ten, with bubble gum, so that the only way of collecting a complete set was to make a trade. I travelled around the United States visiting about 150 photographic “personalities” and had them pose for me. I carried baseball paraphernalia: caps, gloves, balls, a mask and chest protector, a bat, as well as photographic equipment, and made a 14,000 mile odyssey. Out of this experience came 134 Baseball-Photographer images. I »

A new project, Dronestagram, is doing the searching for you, marrying the images of Google Maps satellite view to the episodic, image-sharing capacities of Tumblr and Instagram. When drone strikes are reported by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (which focuses on Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia but not Afghanistan), writer James Bridle tracks down the locations on Google Maps and then Instagrams the picture.

Further evidence that our concepts and ideas of what photography is continues to evolve in new and intriguing ways.

A clear explanation of the difference the Blackmagic Cinema Camera is going to make by making the jump to 12-bit depth.

Which becomes quite clear with math:

The bit-depth simply refers to the different combinations of ones and zeros that is possible (with color images having three channels of bit-depth). The more bits and values possible, the better the final quality will be.

8-bit   — 256 different values
10-bit — 1024 different values
12-bit — 4096 different values

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. (Nov. 11, 1922 – 2007) was one of my very favorite writers, and of course still is – despite the fact that he is dead. So it goes…

“To practice any art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow. So do it.” — K.V., Jr.

Gil Friedberg: Vonnegut in his study

I’ll always reblog a good vonnegut post, especially when it’s a photo of his study I’ve never seen before.

I will have no more AIM

My AOL Instant Messanger account,  which I have used for 14 years, is permanently locked and apparently can not be unlocked. The representative on the phone told me that as my account has no specific details for an address or a zip code, there’s no way for them to unlock the account. Not really sure what this means, but I wanted to note the time and day of death for “stevieflamingo”.

Screenwriters. On Screenwriting. – Charlie Kaufman

Doesn’t matter if you don’t have any interest in writing screenplays, Mr. Kaufman is talking truth in this, and it’s worth your time.

Somehow men’s seeming imposition of a superficial standard of beauty felt less intrusive, less harsh, than the character appraisals of women.

Earth Flag

The Earth flag is not an official flag, since there is no official governing body over Earth. The flag holds a photo transfer of a NASA image of the Earth on a dark blue background. It has been associated with Earth Day. Although the flag was originally copyrighted, a judge ruled that the copyright was invalid.
