Defining and describing the population of ISIS supporters on Twitter

Based on a sample of almost 20,000 Twitter accounts, J.M. Berger and Jonathon Morgan conducted a study considering the demographics and social media activity of ISIS supporters around the world. The paper offers a preliminary examination of the effects of suspending social media accounts and offers policy recommendations to respond to Islamic State extremism online.

Much of ISIS’s social media success can be attributed to a relatively small group of hyperactive users, numbering between 500 and 2,000 accounts, which tweet in concentrated bursts of high volume.
