“Bretone gave the Ramarro a very low nose, which they also wanted sealed as much as possible, taking in just enough air to give some flow around the engine. To achieve the low nose, the mini-spare tire was moved up front ahead of the engine, swapping places with the radiator, which now resides at the very rear of the car. It’s hoped the trip to the wind tunnel will prove that with the wedge shape, the low gentle roof and the short high tail, the airflow will remain attached to the body and then be sucked down into the air intake just behind the rear window. The cover over this intake is opened and closed electrically, and the air flow is aided by three electric fans. It’s also meant that the low nose, high tail and fat tires should reflect »

I read, I heard…

I read in the paper that my brothers are being thrown from rooftops blindfolded with their hands tied behind their backs for violating sharia law. I heard the crowds stone these fallen men if they move after they hit the ground. I heard it’s in the name of God. I heard my pastor speak for God too, quoting scripture from his book. Words like abomination popped off my skin like hot grease as he went on to describe a lake of fire that God wanted me in. I heard on the news that the aftermath of a hate crime left piles of bodies on a dance floor this month. I heard the gunman feigned dead among all the people he killed. I heard the news say he was one of us. I was six years »

Scanning artists de-loot stolen Egyptian treasure from a German museum

2024-04-11T00:01:05+00:00February 23rd, 2016|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Nora Al-Badri and Jan Nikolai Nelles, an Iraqi/German artistic duo, covertly scanned a famous looted Egyptian treasure, the Bust of Queen Nefertiti, from its contested perch in Berlin’s Neues Museum.

The hi-rez 3D file is now free to download and print – the artists have printed their own full-size epoxy resin replica.

The original is the crown jewel of the Neues Museum, but Egyptian curators have long agitate for its repatriation to Egypt – it was looted from an Egyptian site in Amarna in 1912 by German archaeologists. The artists have donated their replica bust to the Cairo museum.

The Neues Museum is believed to have made its own scan of the bust, but it does not share 3D models of its collection as a rule, and has a generally guarded posture towards such »

Becoming a story artist

Ive been getting an influx of messages from students asking me what they can do to become a story artist. I decided to put together a list of a few basic things to get you started on the journey. There is much more that goes into making a good story artist but these are just some of my personal suggestions to start.

First, I always like to suggest some reading material. Here are  few books that really helped me wrap my head around a few ideas:

  1. Visual Story– Bruce Block
  2. Story– Robert Mckee
  3. The 5C’s of Cinematography– Joseph Mascelli
  4. Save the Cat-Blake Snyder
  5. On Filmmaking– Alexander Mackendrick

Next i’d suggest watching as many movies as possible. Studies from the greats Kubrick, Spielberg, Hitchcock, Coen Brothers, Kurosawa, or whoever else you find yourself drawn to. When I say study, I »

Technology is fueling wealth concentration

2018-04-19T02:48:56+00:00January 14th, 2016|Tags: , , |

Technology doesn’t just replace jobs on the assembly line, but any job where work can be automated. As a result, workers have less leverage for a raise. Companies have less loyalty to their communities. And more and more wealth and income is concentrated at the very top.

Steven Soderbergh’s Completely Useless Wrap Statistics For ‘The Knick’ Season 2

The tales of Steven Soderbergh‘s efficiency are legion, but you might make the mistake in thinking he takes an industrial view of filmmaking. Instead, his approach is a product of his years in the game, a process to get the best results without any wasted time or resources, and a method that keeps things interesting for the ensemble of actors he works. But never has this been as pronounced as in the making of “The Knick,” Soderbergh’s superb Cinemax series, which has seen him direct, edit, produce, and act as his own cinematographer across two full seasons.

Stories are how we bond

“Telling stories is how we explain the world to one another, and back to ourselves.“

Even if you haven’t been through something as unsettling as watching your father begin to transition into a rightful female identity, or coming to terms with a parent’s lifelong addiction issues, everyone knows the relief of sharing something long-guarded. It’s impossible to form lasting bonds with other human beings without communicating deep things about yourself to one another — in fact, it’s the primary way we bond. By sharing these experiences on the Internet, those of us who have been through immense trauma or distress have the ability to connect with others all over the world who have been through the same thing. The countless emails, messages, DMs, texts and other technological forms of communication I »

Sound creative advice

2018-04-19T02:48:57+00:00December 11th, 2015|Tags: , , , , , |

There are people who walk on eggshells out of fear, but there is a second type of person who literally distributes eggshells for other people to walk on. Try to imagine how I feel about this second person, who is the negative space around which the exploratory, human work of creativity is allowed to take place.

This is what I would tell you, and you can take this advice or not take it. Its truth is not dependent on your willingness to believe it, so your reaction isn’t super relevant.  But goes like this: you will be an observer – that is to say, not a creator – forever, until the day you find a way to stop using creative people as a proxy for your own stunted drives. You can emerge from this cocoon you’ve made, or you can die »

Rally for American Muslims Against Isis

This is my adorable, brave, intelligent father yesterday at the rally he organized, American Muslims Against Isis. #peaceformuslims (at Times Square – 42nd Street)

Islamophobia comes from ignorance, misunderstanding, and lack of empathy. This guy rules, obviously. He is courageous and amazing.  But boy, I wish there were people like him -everywhere-.

I visited home last week. My family lives in Cranberry, a little suburb of Pittsburgh that has rapidly developed, population-wise and economically, in the last decade. 28,098 people reside there, and 94% of them are white. 3% of them are Asian. There are 351 black people in the entire township, and 107 “other race”.  (data from http://cranberrybusinesshub.org/217/Demographics)  It is noticeably homogeneous to me, almost creepily so, but that is because my daily norm is living in Boston – not exactly a pillar of racial harmony, »
