I couldn’t help but think of this gruesome shot from Taxi Driver (1976, dir. Martin Scorsese) as I watched the final episode of Breaking Bad.

And the more I think about the episode, the more I see a connection between Walter White and Travis Bickle — as heroes on their own terms.

This has been running through my head since I saw it the other night and it explains how Walt clearly thought about himself in the last episode. His opinion of his actions was the only one that mattered in his mind. He’ll be known for being a meth cook in society, but doesn’t care. He demonstrated just how talented and clever he was, and provided for his family. As sad as this is for someone as smart as Walt, he died happy knowing he did it on his own terms.
